About Tha Blackboi
Tha Blackboi’s Biography/Profile
Who is Tha Blackboi? Tha Black Boi is a Ghanaian dancehall artist.
Conscious of a youthful generation keen to celebrate and rejoice whilst seemingly forgetting important elements of their history and culture, Uptown Energy’s THA BlackBoi stands apart from his peers by providing a bridge between traditional Ghanaian music culture and the more recent music culture. Blackboi Movement Africa is his revolutionary response to the serious issues facing the motherland. The acronym T.H.A stands for True Heritaged African – reconnecting Africans to their heritage.
THA Black Boi’s father loved classic high life music from artists such as Kojo Antwi and Fela Kuti and these influences form the basis of his introduction to music and the inspiration behind his blending traditional African melodies with classic Hip Hop. He grew up listening to hip-hop, later realising that the rap music form originated from Africa – the drums, the delivery, the appellations, the instruments; yet he was listening to modern day MCs such as Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour, Tupac Shakur, Rakim, Nas, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli.
In 2011 he recorded “Tears of A Blackboi” a hip hop mixed tape album addressing the neglect of the nation’s youth by the Government who had essentially ignored their voices and concerns. His technique of mixing popular beats to grab the youth’s attention whilst rapping conscious lyrics manages to educate whilst entertaining and gives a conscious reason to stand up for their rights.
It was in 2012 that THA BlackBoi met fellow Ghanaian, the reknowned Yaa Pono, whom he credits as being one of the most influential people in his music career. Pono is a true musician who raps in Pidgeon English, Twi, Ga and Ewe. Yaa Pono took THA BlackBoi under his wing and has given him the platform to hone his technique and demonstrate his lyrical skills. He subsequently joined Uptown Energy, the music family started by Yaa Pono, the aim of the clique is to promote and direct ghetto youth to achieve their goals by studying, working hard and remaining dedicated to their chosen field.
THA BlackBoi released “More Vim” a motivational street anthem inspired by regular citizens of Ghana. The unsung heroes without a recognisable voice and no evident representation in mainstream music. THA BlackBoi brings a conscious and fresh energy to local rap music.
Currently working on his debut album, THA BlackBoi’s first single under Uptown Energy Records, “Mi Ni Yaano”, is due for release on Monday 24th November 2014.
THA BlackBoi’s introduction into the Music industry has been overseen by Uptown Energy with whom he has performed shows across Ghana mainly as support for Yaa Pono. In early 2014, THA BlackBoi travelled to Kampala, Uganda to take part in the popular rap MC challenge “End of the Weak” where he confidently represented the whole of West Africa to rave reviews.
