The truly great Pete Hamill died this morning. Newspaperman, novelist, mentor to so many, citizen of the world. I once wrote that if the pavement of New York City could talk, it would sound like Pete Hamill. Now that city weeps.
Pete Hamill told New York’s story for 60 years. His voice rang loudest & truest when the city was in trouble in the 1970s, like the patriots in Casablanca drowning out the Nazis with La Marseillaise. The goodness of his generous heart never ran low. Thanks for all of it. RIP.
“Pete Hamill, the Brooklyn-born bard of the five boroughs…”
Wonderful obit by the great Larry McShane, which includes this remarkable nugget: Pete Hamill won a Grammy for writing the liner notes for Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks!
My mentor, my muse and, I’m proud to say, my friend Pete Hamill died this morning. Please allow me to share this video of Pete and me at the Center for Jewish History last September, talking about the Irish, the Jews and our New York.
My dear friend, the great Pete Hamill, passed away this morning at the age of 85. He was not just a giant of newspapers and fiction and of his city, he was kind and generous and lived a life, to use his own words, defined by “an old-fashioned thing called grace.”
Devastating news: Word has come that Pete Hamill died this morning. The world just became a far less interesting place.
As a young person I encountered a number of people who exemplified exactly what I wanted to become and people who demonstrated what I did *not* want to be. And sometimes they were the same person. I felt that way about Pete Hamill, whose passing I lament.
