Pauls Bankovskis was born in 1973 in Cēsis, lived in Līgatne until the age of four, later in Sigulda; studied at Sigulda eight-year (later nine-year school). After graduating, he studied at the Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts (RLMV) in the artistic glass processing department. After graduating from RLMV, he studied at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of History and Philosophy, University of Latvia.  During his studies, he started working as a freelance author in the newspapers “Literatūra un Māksla” and “Labrīt”, later also in the magazine “Rīgas Laiks”. In 1996 he started working for the newspaper “Diena” – he was a journalist, later the editor of the supplement “Entertainment”, the section “Books”, since 2001 – the editor of the Internet version of the newspaper “Diena” Diena.lv. Since 2006, the book has been published by the director of “Liepnieks un Rītups” and a collaborator of the magazine “Rīgas Laiks”. Worked in the editorial office of the magazine “Ir”, regular publications on the portal “Satori”. The first literary publications in 1993. He has twice been awarded in the novel competition of the magazine “Karogs” and Raimonds Gerkens (in 1996 for the novel “Laiku grāmata”, in 2002 for the novel “Misters Latvija”). In 2008 he received the Jānis Baltvilks Prize for the book “Mazgalvīši play at home”. In 2009, Kristaps the Great received the award as the best screenwriter for the screenplay for the film “Klucis – the Wrong Latvian”. He was the author of the screenplay for the documentary “Burning” (2016) dedicated to Ilya Rips. For the story “Pearl” he received the main prize of the 2014 Prose Readings. In 2014, the novel “18” was nominated for the Latvian Literature of the Year Award (LaLiGaBa). The collection of stories “Where did the owner disappear?” Was nominated for the 2017 Latvian Literature of the Year Award in the category of children’s literature. Died on 12 July 2020.
