Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Paul Westphal has been diagnosed with brain cancer, according to his longtime friend @MikeLupica . Always considered one of the great gentlemen of the game, Westphal had a decorated career as an All-NBA player and head coach.

Woj, can you let us know what kind of brain cancer he has? Some are benign but most of them kill people eventually. Do you know what stage he got?

Sebastian leone wrote
um that is contradictory… if he had cancer it is not benign because benign means non cancerous, i think you mean tumor in which he has a cancerous one.

Remember watching him in Phoenix and the classy Suns back then. Was a Suns “benchwarmer” and had a few chats with him when I young. Always a classy person, on and off the court. Greatest “shot heard around the world” Celtics game when he stole that inbound ball. Prayers for him.

Agree,a true gentleman but never a bench-warmer with the Suns as he averaged 20. pts 5.2 assists in 6 seasons including 25.2 in PPG in 1978 also had four 40pt games
Westphal was 3x all NBA with the Suns.

Mr. Ambidextrous. All us 70s kids in Phoenix revered Westy. Best all-around NBA guard for five straight years & made the sickest clutch plays in the triple-OT finals in ‘76 STILL an underrated player. HUGE prayers to Paul Westphal. Folded hands.
